Issue 144, Chivalry in the Middle Ages
$7.99
In this issue, we take a look back at the history, practices, and meaning of chivalry. We go to Germany to gain an understanding of the importance of chivalric music and literature. Looking to the East, we explore chivalric love in the famous Persian tale of Khosrow, Shirin, and Farhad, and then onto Byzantium for the breaking of chivalric oaths by crusaders during the First Crusade.
Outside of our theme, we look at saints and horses and the important role these animals played in medieval hagiography. On the art and culture side of things, we take an architectural tour of the beautiful ruins of Elgin Cathedral in Scotland and visit the New Orleans Museum of Art for two exciting exhibitions!
Enjoy!
