Issue 137, Art History
In this issue, we look at the stunning illuminated pages of the Labors of the Month, and how these images functioned to reinforce social roles between elites and peasants. We visit the dazzling Hagia Sophia, which has been in the news as of late due to the controversial decision to convert the church from a museum to a mosque. We go back to the fourteenth century to the Florentine monastery of San Marco to admire the beautiful works of one of my favourite medieval artists: Fra Angelico. We chat with MET curator James Doyle about the current Arte del Mar exhibition running until January 2021 that explores the art of the medieval Caribbean. We delve into the meaning and use of music iconography, and examine how the portrayal of musical instruments in art has informed current scholarship about medieval musical practices and furthered reconstruction efforts. Last, but certainly not least, we share an in-depth look at the life of Henry III in a book review – an exciting new release, hot off the press to add to your summer reading list!
